COGNITIVE and PSYCH-EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT

Picture
A cognitive assessment is a thorough evaluation of a student’s general intelligence and information processing strengths and weaknesses. This is often for the purpose of gaining admittance into programs requiring IQ scores.

Psych-educational assessment is a more in-depth assessment of a student's academic functioning. It can provide useful information regarding a student’s functioning in the areas of: cognition (general intelligence), achievement (reading, written language, mathematics), processing abilities (memory, speed/fluency), language, attention, social, emotional, and/or behavioural functioning. Understanding a student’s unique profile of strengths and needs can help to identify strategies to improve academic achievement. It can also help to reduce a student’s level of frustration related to learning, AND increase their motivation, confidence, and emotional wellbeing as well as inform the support provided at school.
A psych-educational assessment is a comprehensive and integrative process involving:
  • clinical interview to gather relevant information related to the student’s presenting concern
  • administration of standardized assessment instruments
  • feedback meeting to explain the assessment findings
  • written report that integrates background information, current standardized test results, and clinical impressions. Specific strategies to support learning and enhance achievement will be recommended.
