Approach
My approach to therapy starts with a calm, centered and accepting space. I believe in being supportive and direct in creating understanding and support that allows clients to identify and change patterns of behaviour and beliefs that interfere with their ability to cope effectively. When working with children and teens, I encourage parent involvement in the therapeutic work. Parents are seen as the collaborators, models, and mentors of the change desired for their children.
I draw from many theoretical approaches including: Attachment Focused-Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (C.B.T.), Mindfulness, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapies, and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS). I use an attachment lens to help clients understand themselves and their experiences in more meaningful ways.

EMDR Therapy & Attachment Focused-EMDREye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. Attachment-focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) is client-centered and emphasizes a reparative therapeutic relationship using a combination of Resource Tapping™ (Parnell, 2008) to strengthen clients and repair developmental deficits, EMDR to process traumas, and talk therapy to help integrate the information from EMDR sessions and to provide the healing derived from therapist-client interactions. |
Cognitive Behaviour TherapyCognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a relatively short term, focused approach to the treatment of many types of emotional, behavioural and psychiatric problems. The application of CBT varies according to the problem being addressed, but is essentially a collaborative and individualized program that helps clients to identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and learn, or relearn, healthier skills and habits. CBT has been practised widely for more than 30 years. It has been researched extensively, and has demonstrated effectiveness with a variety of emotional, psychological and psychiatric difficulties. |
MindfulnessMindfulness is a conscious awareness of our present moment. This includes openness and non-judgment about the experience. It is often coupled with other types of therapy, such as Cognitive-based Therapy (CBT). The focus is on increasing our awareness of the thoughts, feelings, and actions that hinder our progress. When we are better able to do that, we can engage more readily with those aspects of ourselves, learn to shift our language, and consciously choose how to respond. |

Narrative TherapyNarrative therapy is a style of therapy that helps us become—and embrace being—an expert in our own life. In narrative therapy, there is an emphasis on the stories we develop and carry with us through our lives. The meaning we make of things. As we experience events and interactions, we give meaning to them. The meaning/story we tell ourselves about what we experienced then influences how we see ourselves and the world. A shift in meaning, shifts perspective and that allows for change. |
